I want to play golf, but I don't know where to start?

I live in Arlington, VA, and the country clubs aren't cheap. I want to get lessons, but I don't know where to begin! I'm not sure if the county has any lessons or anything, but I really want to play, and I have NO experience. Where should I start? What kind of clubs should I get? I need all the info please!
