What is the technique used by an author whereby they give an object an identity?

Example is the "Tickler" in Great Expectation by Charles ens. The "Tickler" is a whip, however, whenever they mention it, they use a capital letter. What is this called where someone gives an object a human title or identity? I'm almost certain there is a technique for it!
