Which seems more "artifical?"?

"I'd be nice on top of it call so people would feel guilty to do anything but worship me" or "I was nice on top of it all so people would feel guilty to do anything but worship me" i think the I'd be nice would be fake as you're trying to "be" something that you aren't. get the gist of it?
